Laughter, Puzzles, and Generations: A Day at the ESCAPERS Local Lab in Volos

Theory is beautiful, but practice is revealing. For months, we designed the methodology of ESCAPERS with a central goal: to bring generations together. Recently, at the KIFI of Volos (Centre for the Elderly), we had the chance to see this goal come to life before our very eyes, and the result exceeded all expectations.

The Setting: Anticipation and a Little Anxiety

The atmosphere at the beginning was filled with anticipation, but also a dose of awkwardness. On one side, a group of young people, curious about the game. On the other, a group of seniors, members of the KIFI, perhaps a bit hesitant about what awaited them. “Let’s see, what will the kids show us today? A game? What kind of game?” we heard a lady ask with a smile.

After the initial ice-breaker exercises, we divided the participants into mixed groups. Our shared table became a small universe, a mosaic of ages and experiences. And then, the game began.

The Magic of Collaboration

Within minutes, the initial awkwardness dissolved. It was replaced by concentration, lively discussions, and laughter. What we observed was a beautiful and effortless exchange. We saw digital skills meet life wisdom; young people helping with technology and seniors unlocking puzzles that required knowledge from another era. The fresh, “out-of-the-box” thinking of the youth blended seamlessly with the patience and historical memory of the elders. The game became the occasion, but the real magic was in the small stories shared between puzzles, in the moments of mutual help, and in the discovery that each team member, regardless of age, held a unique piece of the puzzle.

The Real Outcome

Yes, the workshop was a successful test for our game. We collected valuable feedback. But the real impact was much deeper. It was the moment the labels “young” and “old” faded away, and what remained were simply “teammates.” It was the smiles, the handshakes at the end, and the question: “When will you come again?”.

This day in Volos was not just an event. It was living proof that the mission of ESCAPERS works. And it gives us all the energy we need to continue.
